Topic: Mastering the Art of Multitasking
Multitasking, as a human endeavor, is a term that was borrowed from the world of high-speed computers. But for all of the benefits it offers, multitasking comes with a price - both in the realm of computers as well as human endeavors. Yet, despite the misuses and abuses of multitasking, and the call by some to ban it entirely, the fact remains that multitasking is here to stay. Time management has its place, but the challenge of today’s project manager is to take an active role in facilitating 'task management/ rather than simply demanding that individuals better manage their time. In this presentation, Dr. Lon Roberts will share insights from recent research on multitasking along with suggestions on how to get the most out of multitasking as a management strategy.

Program Description:
In the knowledge economy, understanding production costs requires a new approach. If you have more than about five employees working on multiple projects or within many processes, it is time to start thinking about implementing time tracking. If you have 100 people in an R&D group and you’re not tracking time, you’re wasting the lives and work of a significant percentage of your employees. Odds are you have them working on projects that the market isn’t interested in, or that are over-budget or otherwise in the ditch -- and you don’t even know it. Hear real-world customer examples that describe how understanding project accounting costs saved these companies time and money, and instituted a more efficient data collection system overall. Learn why understanding project accounting costs is vital to budgeting and profitability, as well as step by step integration tactics. Find out about impediments to success and potential remedies. Successful projects don’t just happen — they are made to happen. Popular speaker and best-selling PM author Neal Whitten takes leadership and project management to a personal level by revealing leading-edge best practices that make all the difference between leading consistently successful projects and playing the victim with troubled projects. Focusing on leadership and soft skills, but including hard skills and life skills, this seminar reveals choices to make and behaviors to adopt that are invaluable in helping you become a successful project manager and leader. Based largely on his latest best-selling book, Neal Whitten’s No-Nonsense Advice for Successful Projects, Neal has collected practices from among his favorite and most effective — many learned too slowly and painfully. Adopting one can benefit your project; adopting many can benefit your career. It’s not about the ability of those around you to lead; it’s about your ability to lead, despite what is happening around you.

Today’s project manager needs contemporary Application Lifecycle Management that will provide visibility into key project performance indicators. We’ve all heard about IT development projects that fail to deliver. When they do fail, it’s typically a budget or schedule over-run. The project may also fail to deliver on the key project requirements. What about the quality of the delivered solution? Let’s face it. The project manager’s rudder can be small. An effective project manager needs accurate and timely project related information so that project course corrections can be made as soon as possible.

Project management has progressed a long way in the last fifteen years with substantial, positive impact on project success. Many more projects are now ‘successful’ than in the early 1990’s, thanks to the increased emphasis upon sound project management. However, many projects still ‘fail.’ What defines project ‘success’ and ‘failure’? Are there common attributes of successful projects? Are there common causes of failed projects? What exactly do we mean by ‘critical success factors’ and ‘critical failure factors’? What does the empirical evidence from the ‘real world’ tell us about them? This presentation will address these questions.

So, why doesnt management and particularly senior management show more interest? If PM had the same respect that other disciplines do, then organizations would have a CPO position: Chief Project Officer. The fact that the other CxOs, even CIOs, are firmly established, says something about how companies view (or don't view) project management. Yet, everyone in the PM field instinctively knows there is real value in managing organization change through projects. So, what can we do? Join Elizabeth Larson, PMP, CBAP of Watermark Learning, Inc., to find out! Thanks to Watermark Learning (www.watermarklearning.com) for sponsoring this meeting!

Program Description:
Sogeti has developed many models of best practices for the design and implementation of Project Management Offices (PMO). This seminar provides examples of how success was achieved, the value provided, and how to address the gap between your PMO today and tomorrow’s PPO.
The PMI Dallas Chapter meets on the second Thursday of each month

This presentation is a new and innovative look at the PMO.  What is PMO supposed to do?  What is expected from your PMO?  Why a PMO?  What is the value and how to sustain it?  These questions and more will be answered:

  • Are you looking to improve the benefits of your Program Management Office (PMO)?
  • What business benefits are achievable through more effective project management?
  • What can you do to get better results with the same people and budget?
  • How to use a People, Process, Technology paradigm to build a PPO.

David has been a PMP since 1999.  He is a PMI R.E.P., certified in OPM3 and ITIL, who performs the role of Certification Director for the PMI NYC chapter.  He has 20+ years in IT, domestic and international Program and Project Management; Organizational Change, and Project Performance Improvement consulting.  His experience spans a broad range of industries, including Financial, Pharmaceutical, Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Automotive, and Transportation.

As with everything in life, all projects are subject to uncertainty; however, all uncertainty is not the same as “risk”. Project Risks can be “threats” to be minimized as well as “opportunities” to be exploited. Effective Project Risk Management recognizes both types of risks and is a key contributor to “project success”.

Paul Burek, PMP, will discuss techniques for defining a Risk Management Process and using this process to progressively build a Risk Register including: Identifying Risks, Assessing Risks, Developing Appropriate Responses for the Risks and Monitoring Risks throughout the project. Content will include:

·         Collaboration techniques to enable Project Teams to build a final Risk Response Plan in a Brainstormed setting

·         Using structured Brainstorming techniques to gather information for and clearly identify risk, assess risk impacts and determine appropriate risk responses

·         Planning for a Brainstorming Workshop to develop a Risk Plan

Paul Burek is CEO of Solutions Cube Group LLC and a certified PMI Project Management Professional (PMP).  He is an experienced JAD facilitator, project manager and a skilled instructor with a wide range of project management and development experiences. His career spans more than thirty years in software development, project management, education delivery and business consulting.

The Social Compass:

Time Tested Methods to Communicate Better, Understand Others &

Keep Your Project & Team at the Top

“The Social Compass program is one of the best courses I’ve taken. I deal with many different people and this class has equipped me to communicate more effectively and solve problems in a way that will eliminate conflict.” Steven Montgomery, PMP, PMI Dallas Chapter member

Surveys reveal more than 33% of a project manager's time is spent troubleshooting issues relating to poor communication. Imagine what you could do with that time! Dr. Dawdy has surveyed project managers across the country, and communication differences and disengaged employees are big issues within project management. This workshop explores how project managers can talk to their team in order to keep their project on the top of the list (and keep your team members engaged instead of “body present, mind somewhere else”), as well as how to recognize behavioral and communication styles of those with whom you interact. We also implement step-by-step methods to coach your team to higher levels of performance. Why is this important? When we have these tools in place, we can get more of what we want without as much effort!

“Since project management is all about communication, and communication involves people, understanding people and how to best connect is a paramount skill for all Project Managers! Dr. Dawdy’s class is a must for PM’s” ~ Clare Shemeta, Project Manager with Comcast, PMI Mile High Chapter member.

About Dr.  Dawdy, President of Peak Strategies

Gwynne has a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational psychology, an MS specialized in sport psychology, and an MA specialized in counseling. She is a corporate psychologist, organizational trainer and executive coach who specializes in enhancing performance, relations, and successes with project managers, human resource personnel, team leaders, and professional individuals. Dr. Dawdy’s four published book titles include: The Social Compass, Motivation & Inspiration, Gimme Chocolate! (I’ve Had a Bad Day), and Pet Peeves & Problem People.

Establishment of a Project Management Office is a significant undertaking requiring executive commitment, organizational process changes and corporate cultural change. Is your organization ready for this undertaking?   Have you obtained ‘buy in’ from key Executives and Managers?  What can you do to smooth the transition from your current organizational structure once you have a charter?  Using real-world examples, Mr. Almond will review the decision making process and many of the key factors that led to establishing a formal PMO at Electronic Transaction Consultants, Corp.

The presentation will provide insight into the:

·         Decision to transition from a Projectized Organization into a Strong Matrix Organization led by the PMO

·         Organizational considerations

·         Important first steps to gain momentum and ‘buy in’

·         Other lessons learned

Todd Almond, PMP is the Sr. Director of the Project Management Office at Electronic Transaction Consultants, Corporation (ETCC).   ETCC has been quietly building (and, in many instances, re-building) the toll industry since 1999.  ETC’s services ranges from consulting and engineering services, to systems integration and maintenance operations, to customer service center and violations processing center operations.  Mr. Almond is one of the Toll Industry’s most experienced and accomplished leaders with more than 15 years of direct project and program management activities spanning software development, field installation, engineering, and system deployment activities.

According to recent Gartner predictions the amount of time and money spent by organizations establishing a structured project management methodology and improving project execution capabilities will significantly decline.  Most companies have realized that it’s not enough to simply focus on “doing things right” – enterprises have to “do the right things.”

As many as 60% of respondents to a May 2007 Forrester survey said their organization is practicing project portfolio management in some capacity.  This number is expected to increase as the economy slows and executives seek out ways to better understand and control costs. But how does a company go about establishing a project portfolio discipline as part of these cost-cutting and performance improvement efforts?

Speakers, Kane Wai and Cindy Chao of Hitachi Consulting, will provide key takeaways that you can put into practice immediately through their discussion on:

  • How to develop an up-turn strategy through Project Portfolio Management (PPM)
  • The core project portfolio management building blocks to enable your strategy
  • How to engage the organization in the change process

Kane Wai is a Manager for the 3PM (Project, Program & Portfolio Management) Solutions practice in the Southwest Market at Hitachi Consulting. Mr. Wai specializes in working with clients to implement business practices and technology solutions supporting project portfolio management, organizational change management, onshore/offshore project management, process automation, and performance management. Mr. Wai has more than thirteen years of management consulting and project management experience in aerospace, aviation, healthcare, education and software development industries. Mr. Wai holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University and an MBA from the University of Houston – Clear Lake.  He currently serves on the Finance Committee for the PMI Dallas Chapter.

Cindy Chao is a Senior Manager for the Organization and Transformation Solutions practice in the Southwest Market at Hitachi Consulting.  Ms. Chao has more than twelve years of business and information technology consulting experience, focusing on organizational change management. Ms. Chao has industry experience in healthcare, financial services, supply chain management, manufacturing, utilities and telecommunications. Ms. Chao graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas with Bachelor of Science degrees in Management Science Engineering, Mathematics with specialization in Operations Research, and minors in Business Administration and Statistics.

When was the last time you were at the right place, at the right time, for the right opportunity?  Have you ever been there?  Projects don’t succeed by just “happenstance” – they require planning and outstanding execution.  Career opportunities aren’t “happenstance” either.

Tom will help you explore two important principles that will enable you to take hold of your career or business for you to create your right place, right time, and the right opportunity. He will share with you “his right opportunity” which was his involvement in Panama Canal Expansion Program and be your project management tour guide for this important project - voted on March 6, 2008, as the "Most Significant Construction Project in the World."

In preparation for the Expansion program, the Panama Canal Authority contracted in 2007 with The University of Texas at Dallas to provide project management training to over 170 top level project managers and executives.  Tom, part-time faculty member to The University of Texas at Dallas and President of Better Project Results, Inc, coordinated, developed, delivered this training program in cooperation with the $6 Billion Denver-based global project delivery company, CH2M HILL. Step aboard the bus and go with him on this exciting adventure to Latin America and understand the challenges that face the Panama Canal Authority and their project delivery partner CH2M HILL as they tackle this $5.25 Billion program.  You will see an overview of the current plans to deepen, widen, and add additional locks to the Atlantic and Pacific entrances to the canal.  In addition we will discuss how the canal expansion affects the local DFW area….and BETTER YET…How you might be able to find your right opportunity!

Tom Sheives is an international project consultant and coach with his company Better Project Results.  His entire focus is on helping make project teams and management teams successful.  He is a Texas Aggie, a Baylor Bear, has his PhD from the University of New Mexico, and is a graduate of the internationally recognized coach training organization Coach U. Tom is also a part-time faculty member to The University of Texas at Dallas.

One Day Seminar on Service-Based Project Leadership

For New or Experienced Project Managers

“The commoditization and specialization of project management functions is here to stay. It is not hard to imagine any project management function becoming specialized, leaving little for the project manager to do ...  except leadThe new name for those who initiate and sustain transformation through the alignment of the human and social needs of stakeholders is the service-based project leader.”  From The Strategic Project Leader

In this rapidly growing industry, you need to know this:  Your project management services compete on a global basis.  Your services are becoming, if it is not already, a commodity for organizations to purchase when and where they want them.

As practitioners we must ensure our services are distinguishable and provide unique value.  This is a challenge in an industry that is being commoditized by the conversion of individually-held tacit knowledge into organizational knowledge, increased standardization of terminology and processes, globalization and the resulting availability of low-cost highly-educated workers, and cheaper, faster communication methods.  It is not hard to imagine any PM function becoming a specialized commodity, leaving little for the project manager to do, except lead!

If any of this is a concern to you, then let’s figure out a way to separate from the pack, and learn how to provide value to our customers that far exceeds their expectations and the cost for our services!

This presentation will define a bold new type of practitioner the service-based project leader.  Her role is to lead and sustain transformation by creating experiences that initiate the transformation of the people involved — starting with herself —  the systems and ultimately the organization.

The qualities that make her unique are efficiency — focusing on high-value work that impact project goals, customization — tailoring methods and tools to meet stakeholders’ needs, foresight her head-start over her peers (once she relinquishes this advantage she no longer is leading but reacting to events), and connectedness creating a transcendent connection between project team members, stakeholders and customers to bring forth new, life-giving change.

Come on a journey to service-based program leadership.

How important is leadership today?  What kind of leaders do we really need?  What makes a good leader?  We are hearing a lot of verbiage regarding new leadership particularly today.  Elections are getting close and we must make some crucial decisions.  In that mix of information, we are called on to decide what is right not only for us but our country as well.  These decisions will carry over to our personal and professional levels without a doubt.

In today’s globalization of almost everything, the type of leader prevalent has been morphing into a new, unique character.  In the past, leaders who demanded attention and respect were most common. We experienced leadership by intimidation, coercion, and fear.  This has certainly changed for the most part but not entirely. Join us as Keith outlines several ways in detail that might make us better leaders.

Keith Kelley is the President and Owner of Commint, Inc. in Houston, Texas.  He develops new business, establishes vendor relationships, and hires the technical staff for Commint, Inc.  He is a consultant and trainer.  He does system designs for super mini-computers, personal computers, and plotters.  He is an integral part of the implementation of different software such as Portfolio Project Management Systems, CAD/CAM systems, various oil and gas systems, and many others. He graduated from University of Houston, Houston, TX with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Accounting.

Build, grow and develop personal and professional relationships that improve productivity and quality of life.  Personally and professionally the quality and success of our lives depends on our ability to attract and build high caliber relationships that generate desired results fueled by genuine and positive energy.

This lecture will examine Sun Tzu’s 2000-year-old military theory classic, The Art of War as a source of tools and techniques that can be used to manage project teams and individuals towards a successful outcome. By removing the negative associations of “war” from the equation, Master Tzu’s text provides a wealth of information on how to position one’s self, and one’s projects for success in the face of extreme adversity.
