Program Description:

Beyond Time, Cost and Scope: Negotiation Skills for Project Managers

As project managers, we spend a lot of our work life engaged in some type of bargaining - for resources, timelines, budgets, and definitions of success. Then we go home and start all over again – who takes the trash out, where we spend the holidays, what constitutes an acceptable math grade! These agreements are usually made by mutual concessions, and frequently result with no one being really satisfied with the outcome.

This presentation provides project managers with practical tips and techniques for discovering the underlying concerns off each party, finding innovative ways to achieve mutual gain, and creating win-win situations. You will learn:

  1. How to focus on interests, not on positions
  2. How to prepare for a negotiation by identifying your target, your alternatives and your walk-away point; and assessing the same concepts for the other party
  3. How to create value by “expanding the pie” instead of just dividing it through compromise
  4. What negotiation styles are most successful and tips for negotiators who are viewed as “too competitive” or “too cooperative”
  5. As President of The Project Coach, Susan Dodia, PMP has a passion for helping organizations develop project management expertise through practical and efficient practices, tailored to their cultural, organizational and financial environments, without breaking their budgets.

Susan is active as a speaker and trainer on project management topics. She has 15 years of experience in global project and program management. She has served as a critical change agent and skilled team leader, adept at coaching and mentoring project managers, establishing project management methodologies and fulfilling key business objectives, with energy and enthusiasm. During her career, Susan has implemented systems in the areas of Customer Relationship Management (CRM), electronic commerce, and supply chain management.

Susan has a B.S. in Journalism from University of North Texas and is an avid "armchair" journalist, currently writing a monthly opinion column for the Dallas Morning News. She is a Certified Mediator in the state of Texas. She is pursuing her Master's in Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
